BASIC HOS RULES

Driving limit:

Every driver has a set number of hours that he/she can drive each day.

In Canada: Driver cannot drive more than 13 hours in a day
In USA: Driver cannot drive more than 11 hours in a day

30 mins Break

A 30- minute break must be taken after driving for 8 hours or less. This break is mandatory and should be consecutive.
It is advisably not to break early as you might need to take another break after 8 hours of driving.

Off-Duty

As per FMCSA, every driver gets total of 14 hours in a day for driving and On-Duty.
10 hours rest period is required after the end of this 14-hour shift in order to again next 14 hours.
These 10 hours can be accounted as off duty and/or Sleeper Berth.

Reset cycle

Canada
Cycle – 70 hours in 7 days 120 hours in 14 days
After reaching the limit of 70 or 120 hours the drivers need to take 36 hours or 72 hours as off duty respectively. These rest hours must be consecutive.

US
Cycle – 60 hours in 7 days and 70 hours in 8 days.
After reaching the limit if 60 or 70 hours the drivers need to take 34 consecutive hours as off duty.

Personal use

This is a special driving category which allows drivers to drive in OFF- Duty state.
To use personal use the drivers should be free from any kind of commercial responsibility.
Drivers can use this option for going to a safe location while loading or unloading, going to a restaurant from truck stop etc.
